Goat bank

Join us to create a Goat Bank in Kenya!

Through a Goat Bank the families of Orongo would have nutritious goat milk and an income for the meat. The neediest will turn to the goat bank to purchase a goat. By returning the two first kids, they will keep the goat and be refunded.

You can sponsor the purchasing of goats to the bank.

For 800 Swedish crowns (a good salary in Kisumu) you get a goat of good quality that give lots of milk. Insurance for each goat is included as well as a part time salary to someone in Orongo to organise the goat bank.
The goal is to have started during 2008 with 5 goats.
All contributions will make a great difference weather you give a whole goat or a half quarter.
Donate the money to Bank giro 234-1006 giving your name and “goat” as reference.

The platform was made with weddinggifts from Elin and Jad. Thanks to that we have now a basis to start!
Orongo is a small village outside Kisumu in western Kenya. In the rural area people are struggling every day to get buy. Since 2003 Engineers Without Borders have had a close cooperation with Orongo and Friends Pioneer. Many projects have been performed, some with great success. The goat bank will be run by Kaloo Self Help Group, which is the local organisation for self help.

Facts:
The type of the Goat is called Kenyan Alpine. It is a high breed which can survive in the dry and hot area. It produces 3,5 to 4 litres of milk daily. They eat at least ten kilogrammes of fodder daily (one goat).

UPDATE:

The Goats we distributed are all well. We treat them at times when some are sick.
The project are slowly but steady developing. The next step would be to build a borehole for the fodder, so that we can gurantee the safety of the animals even during the drought. We are now looking for funds, to finance drilling the borehole.

We have learned a lesson here during this long dry season: If we had bought Dairy Goats then we would have lost them all.
There was lack of water to water the small garden of Fodder. This is the reason why we decided to start with the local Goats first!

John, from Orongo community:

“It does not matter how long it might be, the better we plan for it the better it will benefit the community.”
